My name is Mary Kate but most people call me MK. I enjoy vinyl records, lighthouses, wine, the ocean, sunflowers, mac and cheese, The Office, and wearing converse with dresses. I like to think of myself as a combination of Meredith Grey (Greys Anatomy), Jess Day (New Girl), and Monica Geller (Friends). I’m currently a college student pursuing a career in Elementary Education and ideally would like to work in a Special Education setting. I chose this profession because I grew up with a twin sister with severe Autism and absolutely adore her. I believe one of my purposes in life is to help people. I have lived with a Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder for as long as I can remember, and have recently been diagnosed with Depression. Midway through my first year of college, I started losing my hair due to Alopecia Areata. By October of my sophomore year of college (2015), my condition progressed to Alopecia Totalis. I was completely bald and without eyebrows or eyelashes. Since then, I have been taking medication which has grown the curly pixie cut you see on me today. I write not only for my own therapy, but I share my story with the hope that it will inspire even just one person to keep living. During my darkest days, anything I read about my condition was only pessimistic. I saw no future for myself until a few moments and people reignited the spark in me that motivated me to get out of rock bottom. If I can be a person or if reading my writing can be a moment in someone’s recovery that makes them believe it gets better, there is purpose in sharing my story.
